Preface

From the perspective that achieving the ultimate goal of using English, such as clearly expressing thoughts by writing or speaking,grasping other's deliever comprehensively while listening or reading, Only taking English as a term or the solution to the goal is a pretty surface level. For example, good communication invovles many aspects which include the goals, partipants's feeling, the recogination degree of speaker's pronunciation, or the thoughts whether or not were organzied in a clear way that can convinence the listenrer's understanding, or the complexitility of the topics.

So the quesiton that achieve the ultmate goal should convert into how to build the necessary foundation,Then align with these relative solid fodundation, Considering which aspects should delibreately put more practice? Such as how to organze thoughts in a more clear ways or the more deep understanding about some domain knowledge. Obviously, the demands varies on different people as their specific scenarios or background. Some peple prefere a more adcamic writing level, some people prefer the more elegant public speech, or both of them. Whatever, the more push forwards, the more specific practice should depend on the individuals themselves.

Returning to the topic that truely mastering English itself, why I always stick my mind to this concern? If take personal life or career as a battle in the global economic cooperation, grasping English can take as conquering the military stronghold. Conquering it means the more potential resourss and opportunites, and the more leverage for the follwoing battles in my life. Even during the AI area, it also play significant role related with using AI, As English dominates about 55% of internet materials, which as the critical source for training the LLMs, the content originated in English will work more efficient and precious while using LLM with English. Or Talking with tutors who speak English can clairfy my confusions quickly comapred with speanding long time thinking and checking, and can motivate my spirt. To be specifically, grasping English in different levels, the higher level grasped, the more efficient the people can intgerated with the global resource, the more leverage for the individuals.

The previous post The-journey-on-how-to-improve-English-level-from-the-practical-perspectives that talked about my ways of improving English, which mostly focus on the methods themselves, but as I acrossed the basic stage, work well for normal or basic conversation, however, other critical or specific issues always emergy. In the other words, the goals that have the casual conversation with some guys, for example, introduce myself, limited or casual conversations ... all these actually bring the convienve in real life, but that actually doesn't leverage the power of the language.

Building a long and meaningfull relationships no matter in life and career, which doesn't limited cascual conversations or jokes, also require deep conversations, the complex or new thoughts delivery occur from time to time, Obviously the necessary knowledge or vocubaries were needed to expand to the level as native lanaguage in some scenarios.

To be more practical, it's unavoidable in the pressure enviornment or the more complex circumstance using English. For example, if I were in the adverse situation, Can I express my opinions in a clear and appropriate way, Or duing a severe discussions, all the participants are in the critical thing model, Can I actually diever my thoughts in a clear way in a limited time. To some degree, I think that's represent the real level of grasping one language.

So this post I will put more content on the specific issues that should improve or solve.

1. Pronunciation

Previously, I always skipped the pronunciation practices intentionally or unawarenessly. I had always been triggerred by the compulsion to grasp more words or expressions or engage in more conversations. Of course it's benefical for improving English level. However, after some obversations of my speaking, and some experimentation, I found it's necessary to stick to the pronunciation practice from time to time.

Last year, I tried to study the first chapter of Ready for C1 along with testing how AI can help me during this process. See Checking my English by Leveraging AI along with my personal ways. Briefly speaking, one of the goals is to get feedback from AI. For example, analyze my speech from pronunciaiton to the words usage, check my writing level or issues comapring with the standard academy paper, and got more suggestions.This section more focuse on pronunciaiton involved with this experimentation, others will mentioned in the following sections.

What I found some vowels or consants usually can't get above 90% correctness, pitch or tongue change always seemd wired, It's not easy for me to speak some sentences with enough emotion, it's always in monotone level.

So I returned to the shadow practices again, and deciced to check the pronuniciaiton from time to time, maybe every one month or three months. Because some quesitons or improvement will become obvious when check them again after some times, and based on this comparions can get more benefical feedback. One of the obvious feeling for me after practcing showdow practic for some time is become more aware the other's pitch change while listening.

Below are some insights or tricks which are very helpful for me during the pronunciation practices.

1.1 Jaw movement and tougue relaxtion

For speaking the correctness of vowels or constants, the manner and the postion plays significant impact on the speaking effects.The manner means the ways to how to speak one syllable, such as /w/ when two parts of the mouth come together without stopping the free flow of air between them. Postion involves tongue,lip,jaw. For example when speaking /ai/, /i:/ the jaw dropping down, and /ai/ move more futher than /i:/.

One critical issue for me is the jaw movement is not enough. like /ai/, previously speaking it with little movement of jaw.

Another issue is the conversions of tougue status between tension and relation. such as relax /i/ verse tension /i:/. when speak /i/ the tongue is not enough relax.

One intersting obversation for me, Even for my native language, my lip and jaw movement sometimes is not enough, which make the sounds more vague even for my relatives or some friends. Making sense English pronunciaiton also help me figure out my natice pronunciaiton issues.

These are my personal pronunicaiton issues, Of course the possile issues vaies on different people. however, once make sense the core issues, the following practice will gain more real effects.

1.2 More musle work in the back of the month for American Accent

American accent, most of the musle work in the back, especiallfy in the back half of the togue. American English involves little front mouth and lip monvent during speech. On the contraty, European, Asia, African, South American, front musle doing much work during speach.

1.3 Intonation and pitch change

Seems it's a common sense that should aware the pitch change while speaking, such as when the pitch is high or low during speaking one word or some sentences. However, include me, some people still speak in a monogue level. One practice trick was often recommended is shadow practice, that can develop the muscle memory.

1.3.1 Primary Word Level Intonation Patterns

The pitch change from one syllabl to the following syllabl can be divied into two categories, step and slide. for step, such as /paper/, pa-per, there are obvious distanct change from /pa/ to /per/, for slide, love l-o-v-e, each pitch chang is move smoothly.

For step and slide,not limited to one direction, either up or down.

Previously, I was pretty confused when someone speak very quickly, and using the different stresses when speaking one word. I was just wondering how do they remember all differnt emphases for all words. It's very overwhelming to remember all of them. However as the above 8-patterns shows, familair with these patterns, and practice more, this issues become more easy to solve.

1.3.2 One trick make sense the pitch change for paragraph

In addition to pitch change in individual word, how about the pitch change in a long sentence, or a bulk of paragraphs. One trick is very effective, is to translate the paragraph into native language, feel the pitch change while speaking the content in native lanugage, and then compare the pitch change with the feeling while speaking the English version, this comparions will make the feeling more sense.

1.4 Others

The necessary other points is beyond American accent, like accustomed to more differnet accents, such as make sense British accent or India accent. Meanwhile can let more people from different regions can easy catch up my accent. That need more emmuse for the different accent and more practice with the different people from different regions.

Of course, from the comprehensive perspective, so many other facorts omitted, such as the tricks speaking the linked words, or the correct desrciption of vowels or constants. I think this is not the practical perspective, Most people as English a second language, always has some fundation, the goal is not review or study all the basic knowledge again, the goal is aware the basic components, and figure out which components are missing or crtical. For me, above are my obvious issues and must solve if i want to push my pronunciaiton level forward.

2. The necessary following check list

So the following question is beyond pronunciaiton what about other necessary considerations?

To take the issues more vividly, take below two videos as the exmaples.

My feeling about my fluency

Most time and for most general topics, I can get others thought, even sometimes there are some missing during the conversation, which doesn't matter for delivering main content. Obvious stuck is when the expression involves with more advanced collsions or words along with the unfamilair topics (like the second video talks the economic policies). Of course, the understanding about the topics also contributes to the fluency.

One obvious feeling is the hesitated stop for a relative long time comparing with the native speakers(when I compare my speak speed with the first video), Also I feel my speak it's not natural and the listeners will feel wired comapring with native speakers.

To make the potential issues or questions more easily to track, and supply more solvable approaches, break them into below questions.

From the speaker's perspectives

1. How about my deliver degree, 80% or 60%?
2. Comparing with above videos, Seems there are some missing comapring with the native level speaking, what's the missing, the words, the awkard expressions, or the needed domain knowledge?
3. To be specific for the mising parts, I break it into four layers, how about each layer?
   1. The necessary needed words/expressions.
   2. The content understanding.
   3. Organze the thoughts in a clear way, Does it achiveve the delivery goal?
   4. From the sentence structure level, Can I organize the words or sentences in a natural way and quickly expressing my thoughts?

From the listener's perspectives?

1. Do I actually get the whole meaning? How much degree I got the meaning?

2. If I missed some content, what's the missing, the reasons why I missed?

   1. What are the missing: words, background knowledeg, English culture reference?
   2. What's the left content that I can't quickly got, What are the undeneath reasons, The avialiable apporaches?

3. Some content or words/expression even I know, still can't quickly catch up. what's the reasons?

What's the relationships between speaking and listening?

I think one can speak one topic along with some words or expressions and others can understand, no problem listening the same topic along with the similair words or expressions, even the words or expressions structure varies or in a unfamilair accenct.

But one can understand some topics by reading, maybe can't express the topic fluently, Also sometimes encounter some problems while listening or speaking the related topics.

How to understand the gaps among the reading, speaking, listening?

Briefly speaking, I think the reason directly points to the English foundaton is not enough, lacking enough practice in different scenarios to achieve the level as the native language. For more related points, I will mentioned them in section 3.5 Involved AI experimentation for writing and reading, which based on my previous experimentation Checking my English by Leveraging AI along with my personal ways

3. Break the list one by one and the corrospending approach

From the speaker's perspectives

3.1 How much the deliver degree while speaking?

Naturally, the goal is 100% percent deliver degree while speaking, to make sure listeners can get the main content. Of course, even some times speaker make some mistakes, such as the wrong usage of words/expressions, even the grammar mistakes, The listeners can also got the meaning from the conversation content. However which increase the recognition load for listeners.

Personally, based on below criterions, my feeling about my deliver degree approximates 50%~80%.

1. whether or not successfully delivery the main content.
2. Some obvious mistakes increasing the listener's cognition work.
3. Pronunciaiton issues make listeners hard to understand.
4. Content itself (familiar level and complexed level), which need higher expression level or some tricks along with the increasing complexitilites.

3.2 What are the missing parts?

3.2.1 The usage of words,phrases,idioms or expressions

Based on the familiarltiy and grasp level. I diviede them into below categories.

1. New words, phrases,idioms or expressions. Almost don't know, depend on the guess.

Some of them related with the advanced collsions or the domain term, such as "ebb and flow" that I can't guess the meaning when I first encounter this phrase or homomorphisms when I first learn group theory.

2. Vague understand. Under specific content, can get the meaning.

Sometimes can get the correct meaning, sometimes lost. This often occurs in reading and listening, recoginize the words in reading and lost in listening. For example, take above second video as example, the expression: "the strong momentum", "momentum" which likes moment, The first thought came into my mind may be the meaning of moment. However the actual meaning is force or strength.

"complulsory relocation", for the "complulsory" is relative easy to idendify while reading, However, it's rarely listening this word. So, can't quickly figure out the meaning of this expression.

Above phenomenons involve either I know my understanding maybe wrong or I don't know but aware I have enountered them before. All of these will affect my real conversation from time to time.

Sometimes the reasons why don't understand some content is not becuase the diffculites of the content itself, just because don't know the word meaning or the vague understanding about some words. However as one reading enough books and make sense the correct meaning from the books or the related materials, the accmulated enough necessary basic words or expressions will help one understand more content in more and more scenarios.

3. Most time make sense, occosically wrong.

This situaiton is the opposite of the above situation, Above is most time gussing wrong, occusally get the right answer. This situaiton is most time get the correct meaning, occusally get the wrong answer.

Take me as an example the word charactoristic, make sense in most situaitons, but always can't fluently speaking this word.

4. Reading recognize

Make sense the meaning while reading, but need more time to think while speaking or listening.

Once a time, I listen someone said hundredth while explaining concept, but I mistakenly take it as one hundred. This leads to my logic stuck, however when I convert one hundred to one hundredth, It works. This shows sometimes the unclear will create more regonition load.

Other similar categories for me can read but can't work in listening or speaking like below

1. Some general knowledge. such as how to speak countires name.
2. How to speak some math symbols.

The above points involved with new words to reading recognize, there are huge words or expressions related with this level that it need to push it to the basic or master level. My approach is when I encounter the words I know, but can't sure whether or not my pronunciation is right, record them together, until enough record then ask AI generate paragraphs, I will shadow practice these sentences to build correct prounciation or feeling.

I think the first high ROI is these, pick them up, more familiar with them, then try to apply them in different scenarios or creating more possibilties to encounter them.

Another trick which was recommended by Drew Badger, the EnglishAnyone founder, that is reviewing the same content for many times in different ways. Such as the same article, watching the video one time, listening the related audio one time, and reading the article one time. Or listening the different accent for the same content, like American accent or Australian accent. Or reading the artile using different tense, from the past tense to future tense or present tense.

5. Basic level

Recognized them, and can make sense their meaning in most situations. But sometimes can't quickly apply them, and no guarantee the 100% confidence.

Seems many people struggle with these situaitons while want to achieve the master level.

I think the reason is that people most time grasp the words or expressions in a passive way, don't put more time and energy try to apply them, or lacking the corrospending enviornments apply them in different secnairos, missing the opportunites to make sense the sophiscated usage of one language.

6. Master level

Confidently apply them correctly in different scenarios, sometime using expressions in a creative or sohphsticate way.

3.2.2 Master level comparision between English and native language

Most educated people can apply their native language beyond the natural level, For their profession, they can achieve the precious level, some smart guys can apply the elegant usage or creative way.

Comparing with native level, For english, the benchmark I think for the professional requirements, should achieve the precious usage. daily life or casual conversation should achieve the natrual usage. And more higher level should depend on individual's own ambition and talent.

3.2.3 The understanding level for the content

No matter speaking which language, the understanding level of one topic is the foundation to express. And this is the point I mentioned earlier that after building the necessary solid language foundation, which apsects should take more delibrate practice to push forward. For example. Engineers knows so many terms related with their industry, and when speaking to the guys without the related background, the enginner can speak the term in a plain and easy understand way. The people who have so much interest in history, It's natural for him to pick the history events and showing the background and the following effects. Take English as a tool, this is the real usage for a langaugage for one's life and career. And the more meaningful and beneficial usage is to gain the more resouces and communiciation. For these scenarios, English only as a default process in the background.

Image a scenario, financial engineers discussing how to implement the option protocol, should make sense the widely applied model(Black-Scholes). make sense the basic concepts of options, how to take account the risks and rewards. Even for the English native speakers, It also need a long time to absorb these concepts and can can apply them in a correct way. If one can discuss the desgin based on her knowledge of options without realizeling English iteself, and implement his desgin, this demonstrate the guy actually achieve the real usage for one langauge.

3.2.4 Organze words or sentences in a natural and elegant way

When expressing one topic, there are many different ways organzing the thoughts, which play the crtical effects on listener's understanding. As the topic become more complex, the ways play the more critical roles.

Open any English grammar book, there exists one one big component that involves with how to use different tenses. It's also the core compents for standard regular test, Recalling my students days, there exists one phenomenon that is even one can answer the regular tests correctly, but also diffcult to apply them in writing and speaking. However, the foundation that creates the necessary foundation for the one who want to achive a higer level.

Generally speaking, some tenses or sentence structures are heavily used, such as below. make sense below can dealing with most daily scenarios and work requirements.

1. the present simple.
2. the present progressive.
3. the past simple.
4. the past progressive
5. the present perfect, the future.

For the typical sentence structure: subject + verb + object, that can desribe subject and object by using clauses, even for the verb, adv can also make it more vividly. which leads to the sentence structure more complex.

For example, this sentence - Had Mallory been in possession of the kind of camera adventurers take for granted today, his fate would no longer be the subject of speculation., which applies both inversion and conditional clauses to create a more advanced sentence structure.

More grammar details are coverd by the related English grammar books. The more reading, the more related grammar applied will encounter, the more complex and long content encounter, the high possibilties will encounter the grammer using in a complex way. On the contrary, when writing more, It will find it necessary to grasp these grammar correctly.

Take me as an example, how about my level of applying grammars? Even for the basic grammar, I can't gurantee my usage is a clear and elegant way. And this was verified during my AI experimentation.

This level is result of the combination of persistance plus amibitons plus talent. Why I mentioned this is remind me achive the required basic level is the goal, but for the level iteself, also there are a long way if want to enter a more higher level.

3.3 From the listening perspectives

3.3.1 How much degree I get the meaning while listening?

Generarlly speaking, this also varies on the topic's complexitivity and the familiar degree. However, although seems most scenarios I can catch all, but also in some scenraiso it's not enough to catch all the content. Take above second vodeo as an example, the involved words or expression(such as compulsory relcoation , urban renewal) some of them don't familiar with, and can't catch them quickly during listening, which leads to the vague understanding about the content.I think the necessary basic goal like native language is no problem in listening news, podcases, watching videos,TV or movies.

3.3.2 The missing parts leads to the diffculities for comprehensively understanding

There are some overlaps with speaking, Obvious aspects includes the grasp level of words,phrases,idioms or expressions, and the familair degree with the topic itself. The reading recognize level sometimes works for speaking, however it sometimes stuck while listening, as the limited time to absord the meaning, especifially for some scenarios that rarely encounter. For example. one don't always pay attention to economic news, although have saw urban and renewal, so hardly make sense them together in a limited time. Of course, it's impossible familiar with every topic, but the necessary broader degree is a need.

3.3.2.1 the usage of some words or expressions

Sometimes the problem is someone can speak in a clear way and people can understand, but when listen the same topic or using the similair words or expressions, occusally stuck. One of the crtical issues is related with the pronunciaiton. For example, encounter the wired pronunciaiton, along with the applied other factors such as linked words, quick speed. That's why I put pronunciaiton as the first priority, so make sure my speaking is more correct, make sure more people can understand, and help me accustome to different accents, that I can understand some words or expression even for different scensariso. Of course, this need long time emmersion, develop the feeling.

Derived from above point, should build the correct solid relationships between speaking and listening: for some words or expressions, at least work well for normal and basic words or expressions. Initially, make sure speaking and listening both works well, avoid when speaking work well but listening stuck, versal vice.

3.3.2.2 Content itself

For listening, beyond the point 3.2.3 The understanding level for the content mentioned, I feel it's easy to feel tired when I practcing the listening for a long time, such as repeating what others said comparing with my native language, and it's always missing some detaisl, which don't like native langugae that I can almost catch everything, or find some hidden clues. It's more like physical execrices, should increase the muscle power, to adpot to the more intense activitlies, same as quickly absorb the complex content and can repeat them in a correct and clear way.

3.3.2.3 The differences comparing speaking with listening

Speaking emphasice how to organize the structure of the sentences in a clear way, On the contrary,the encountered sentence's strucutes is relative simple but should catch the meaning in a limited time while listening.

For listening,the familiar degree of the topic or the related background konowledge also contributes a lot.

3.4 wheelfly between speaking and listening

Learn new words or expressions, make sense them during reading, the grasp level will become more effective if encounter them during a conversation and check them again, the more times encounter them in the random situaitons, the more effective , and for the future cascual scenarios, can apply the words or expressions automatically and naturally, which demonstrated the real mastering the words or expressions. This like the trick I mentioned earlier that review same content in different ways in many times.

3.5 Involved AI experimentation for writing and reading

Above from the speaking and listening perspectives, of course, reading and writing also play the critical roles,decides whether or not the foundation is solid, and this also decide how deep the conversation, how advanced level one can achieve. As the real understanding of some things always depends on the reading or writing, no matter write documentaiton or some implementation for coding.

The section: What's the relationships between speaking and listening?, I mentiond reading is OK, but doesn't work well for speaking and listening, if dive into the reading and writing, some issues become obvious. The goal is push forward the reading and writing level, which will generate the positive effects in speaking and listening.

Some conclusions

From the several perspectives — including advanced grammar, more complex sentence structures and richer language use— this article is more complex than my usual reading materials. That’s why I think it’s worth reading multiple times, as it gives me a clear reference point for what a higher-quality article looks like.

The more I read, the more I can feel the beauty and power of language. With each reading, I enjoy discovering its sophisticated grammar, useful expressions, complex sentence patterns, and elegant combinations even more.

WRITING

You demonstrate a Lower-Intermediate to Intermediate level (A2/B1 transitioning to B2) in English writing, sufficient for communication of basic ideas but currently lacking the grammatical accuracy and stylistic control required for formal academic or high-stakes examination writing.

Comparing with the previous English practice articles The-journey-on-how-to-improve-English-level-from-the-practical-perspectives, this article more focus more on the specific issues, and more concretely. One feeling is my English foundation is not solid, so should put more time and energy on the the specific errors and the lacking. My previous learning and practice more like the "immersion mode", which absorb freely, don't over-correct myself. And this article more like the "precision mode", should guarantee the correctness, then advance in the complex.

4 The metrics showing the real English level

Above show the concreate issssues from different perspectives and the avaibale approaches, but how about verify the real English level or stage? Some instituaiton release their standards, like CEFR levels. However, from the practical perspectives, below are my own metrics.

4.1 Listening regonition. How broad scenarios I can understand? Do I catch every normal things like native language, such as news, podcasts, casual conversation,videos without subtitles. It's impossible to recognize all topics, but no problems at least for my career, daily common topics.

4.2 Expression recognition. Does my speaking can be understand by the listeners from different regions? Do they have some troubles while listening?

4.3 Comprehensive level. The comprehensive and accurate level while speaking, writing. What's the missing? which components are always missing, which increase the diffculties during speaking and writing.
